Ashley Cureton (Bhavalkar)

Dr. Ashley E. Cureton (Bhavalkar) is an assistant professor in the School of Social Work and the Marsal Family School of Education. Prior to her current role, Dr. Cureton was a Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellow and lecturer in the School of Education and the Department of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University. As a community-engaged researcher, Dr. Cureton explores the educational, socio-emotional, and environmental needs and outcomes of refugee and migrant youth and their families. Her research builds on over a decade of research and practice focusing on child and adolescent development among migrant and refugee populations and other marginalized groups in global contexts like South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, Jordan, Turkey, and India. She draws on arts-based methods to consider how to better support the socio-emotional needs of refugees and migrants. Dr. Cureton has a background in musical theatre and employs Forum Theatre techniques in her courses.
